Signs of Easing Credit and Talk of Stimulus Buoy Stocks
Signs of improvement in the credit markets and comments by
the Federal Reserve chairman that seemed to encourage a new
government stimulus package helped give Wall Street a big
lift on Monday. The Dow Jones industrials closed up 413
points, or 4.6 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index
rose 4.8 percent, and the Nasdaq composite index was up about
3.4 percent.
