U.S. Stocks Slide After Rout Overseas
Stocks on Wall Street ended lower on Friday but avoided the
deep losses feared at the start of the day after a rout in
trading overseas. At 4 p.m., the Dow Jones industrial average
was down about 300 points and the broader Standard & Poor's
500-stock index was off 3.5 percent.
